I feel like the author was not inspired. It needed more chemistry. I'm tempted to call it historical fiction (rather than romance) because it seemed more about resistance fighting and French soldiers than other things.

The British are fighting Napoleon. Polly travels from England to Portugal to work in a hospital with her sister and help with the war effort. She meets Hugh. The war keeps them apart. But later Polly and Hugh are taken prisoner by French soldiers. The second half of the book is their experience as prisoners.

The initial conflict in the relationship is the age difference. Hugh is 37. Polly is 18.

The book blurb said Polly turned from an ugly duckling into a beautiful, desirable swan. I would not have written that. There was no change. Polly wore spectacles and was short. The author did not call her plump or round but said she would always have to watch what she eats. Hugh meets her and is drawn to her from the beginning. He didn't change either. All this was ok with me, I'm just mentioning it because the blurb was misleading.

The first sex scene is about four pages long. It was ok. After that there were about five brief sex scenes or references to.

Marrying the Royal Marine Carla Kelly 9780373295982 Books Reviews

To me, this is one of those books that keeps you from starting another book right away. I just wanted to savor it in my head for a while. The characters are well drawn and interesting. There comes a time in many books where you can't believe the characters are "that stupid", and I usually have to put the book down or skip a section to keep the frustration level down, but this one I just wanted to read in one sitting. I had to hurry home from work so I could see what happened next.

Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Junot is the bored royal marine of the title. Bored and restless he may be, but he's not boring. On route from England to Portugal, he meets young Polly Brandon, the illegitimate daughter of nobility, on her way to visit her sister who helps run a naval hospital near the front. Junot is a character with character. He's at home on the water, Polly (whom he nicknames "Brandon") definitely is not. They are forced to ignore the constraints of socially acceptable behavior, first with Polly's seasickness, then when they are captured by the French and marched cross country as prisoners of war. Junot maintains his dignity at all times and helps Brandon do the same. Polly Brandon also shows exceptional character. She may have been captured, but she learns quickly how to stay alive when it isn't always obvious that she will. She doesn't turn into a squeamish girl or the stereotypical "too stupid to live" heroine. I liked that they both showed human emotions, neither one was a super hero, they were both scared, they both cried at times, they were strong when they needed to be. If you are looking for torrid sex scenes, you won't find them in this book, but that's not to say it isn't romantic. Hugh and Brandon are perfect for each other and their love grows naturally and they figure it out soon enough so "does he or doesn't he" is never part of the plot.

The plot is interesting and a somewhat realistic view of the horrors of war. It won't leave you sitting up at night with PTSD, but it doesn't sugar coat atrocities. Hugh is not the kind of leading man who is able to best all his enemies with might, but he's able to roll with the punches and figure out how to keep the two of them alive. Brandon doesn't let being female stand in the way of being heroic, nor does she let being English stand in the way of being human.

This is the third in a series, but I am not sure I can believe that the other two could be better than this one. This book will stay with me for a while and I will definitely be reading it again.
Polly Brandon and her two sisters will never dance at Almack's or curtsy to the Queen. They are all illegitimate daughters of a loathsome lord. Polly, at 18, is the youngest, and she is en route to Portugal to her sister Laura, who is married to a military surgeon there. And that's where she meets Lt. Col. Hugh Philippe d'Anvers Junot, who is also en route to Portugal. Of course, she is headed for Oporto and he is headed for Lisbon, but for some reason he finds himself altering his itinerary slightly to escort Polly to her destination.

Hugh has been thinking of settling down, and even though he knows that at 37, he is far too old for young Polly, he finds himself attracted to her. When it turns out that she is a dreadful sailor, he is the one who has to go to her side and nurse her, including changing her clothes and bathing her. (Now I'm thinking. . . why doesn't she have a chaperone? Will they be forced into marriage? Hmm. . .)

Anyway, the two end up spending a great deal of time together. Hugh affectionately calls her "Brandon" as he would one of his marines, and he is seriously tempted to offer for her except that her sister warns him off. The pair miss each other dreadfully when he takes his leave, but it isn't until later, when they find themselves in a seriously dangerous situation, that they both learn what true love is all about.

If you're expecting this to be a typical regency with balls and reticules and drives through Hyde Park, you will be disappointed. This story occurs during the regency time period, but is set in the middle of the wars on the peninsula with all of its corresponding violence.

There are some who will object to the age difference; I find it charming--certainly no more than that of Jane Eyre and Rochester. This one goes right beside my favorite Carla Kelly regency, Libby's London Merchant, as one of the best regencies I've ever read, and Carla Kelly right next to Mary Balogh as one of the best ever regency authors.
